Accessibility Statement — Haarlem Artspace

Haarlem Artspace is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all visitors. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our exhibitions and programmes. We recognise that our first-floor gallery space is not fully accessible to people with mobility impairments due to the layout and historic nature of the building.

Physical Access

  • Location: The gallery is located on the first floor of a Grade II listed building.
  • Stairs: Access to the gallery is currently only via a single flight of stairs.
  • No lift or ramp: Because of the building’s listed status and current budgets, we are unable to install a lift or alternative step-free access at this time.
  • Mobility: This means the main exhibition space is not accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters, or those who cannot use stairs safely.

Facilities and Support

While the building itself presents limitations, we are committed to supporting access in other ways:

  • Assistance: If you need help planning your visit or require specific support, please contact us in advance or speak to a member of staff on arrival.
  • Alternative materials: We can provide digital or printed materials (e.g., exhibition guides, labels) ahead of your visit on request in large print, email, or other accessible formats.
  • Quiet visit: If you would benefit from visiting during quieter hours (e.g., outside peak times), we are happy to advise what times tend to be less busy.
  • Carers & companions: A companion or carer is always welcome to support you during your visit.

Other Accessibility Information

We aim to make our communications — including our website, event listings, and printed guides — as accessible as possible to a wide audience. This includes:

  • Clear, straightforward language in our public information.
  • Contact options for accessibility enquiries and feedback.

Feedback and Contact

We want to hear from you. If you:

  • Have specific access requirements,
  • Encounter barriers not described here,
  • Or would like information in an alternative format, please contact us:

Email: kris@haarlemartspace.co.uk

We will aim to respond to accessibility enquiries as quickly as possible and normally within 5–7 working days.

Future Plans

We regularly review how we can improve access and seek external advice where possible. While structural changes (e.g., lifts/ramps) are not currently feasible given the constraints of the building’s listed status and budget, we are exploring other ways to support access — for example through alternate programme formats, visitor support, and improved access information. Your feedback helps shape these priorities.
